Our Current Target
English Language Learners are among the students most susceptible to lost academic potential.
According to a 2007 study done by the Alliance for Excellent Education, English Language Learners (ELLs) make up at least 10.5 percent of the student population. These numbers are steadily rising, so it is paramount that current and future English Language Learners not be left behind academically. 71% of ELLs perform below average in reading, with only 4 percent performing at-level or above. With the literacy rate of children nationwide 38 percent below-level (NEA.org), we need to act.
There is a strong correlation between parent involvement and literary success in children--77 percent of children who are frequently read to will have higher reading levels, versus only 57 percent of children who are not. Unfortunately, in most ESL homes, the books children bring home from school are in English, and their at-home support is likely monolingual.
Language of Laughter seeks to reach out to those children who are struggling with all types of literacy, who believe themselves to be incapable of utilizing language as an integral and valuable tool for success. We seek to acquire books and materials in both the child's native language and their second language, as we believe this will enable parent support and and encourage multi-literacy. With the help of businesses, comedians, and educators, we aim to plant seeds for a more inclusive future less restricted by language, and rather one in which language leads to equality and collaboration.
